 se on the use of artificial intelligence for research.\\r\\nThe course off
 ers doctoral candidates in the humanities and social sciences a structured
  introduction to the use of artificial intelligence in research\, with an 
 emphasis placed on AI-augmented methods rather than any particular set of 
 applications or platforms. By the end of the course\, participants will un
 derstand how generative large language models are built and why this shape
 s their behaviour\, be able to deploy AI models as "tool-building tools" c
 apable of handling bespoke research tasks\, possess a working overview of 
 the features offered by the major AI platforms\, and be equipped with a ba
 sic framework for critically evaluating and benchmarking AI-generated outp
 uts. The aim throughout is to leave students with transferable methodologi
 cal competencies that remain useful to them as humanities and social scien
 ce scholars even as the underlying models and applications continue to rap
 idly change.\\r\\nThe course is divided over two half-days on November 9th
