Following further studies in art history and comparative literature at Ludwig-Maximilians University (1992-1996) in Munich and the University of Chicago (M.A. Comparative Literature, 2002), he began a doctoral dissertation in Chicago on German expressionist cinema before transitioning to a career in digital humanities in 2005.

For the next five years, he served as Director of Humanities Computing at the University of Chicago. He subsequently returned to Germany, where he worked on the DARIAH digital research infrastructure at the State and University Library of Göttingen. From 2015-19, he was the digital project manager for the Cultures of Knowledge project in the History faculty at the University of Oxford and participated in a series of Mellon and AHRC-funded research initiatives as well as the EU COST Action "Reassembling the Republic of Letters."

In 2019, he relocated to Amsterdam to work in the Digital Infrastructure department in the Humanities Cluster of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences (KNAW), where he served as a digital humanities consultant and advisor for several externally funded projects and European partnerships, including EU Horizon 2020 Odeuropa project and the Dutch national research infrastructure funded Globalise project. For further details, please see his CV (PDF).

Currently, he is focused on exploring the opportunities, methodological risks, and technical challenges of using artificial intelligence for humanities research. This has involved surveying tools for semantic search and text retrieval, and evaluating the use of locally run AI models for image analysis and speech transcription. Most recently, he has been testing methods for connecting cultural heritage collections to an AI assistant, making them searchable and analysable in natural language. In the Autumn he will teach two new courses on applied AI for research at the Graduate Center.

He has been leading the RISE team since 15. September 2025.
