Maximilian Hindermann (né Huber) studied philosophy, mathematical logic, and history at the University of Basel, the University of St Andrews, the Institute for Logic, Language and Computation (ILLC) in Amsterdam, and the University of Bristol. In 2017 he completed his PhD at the Université de Genève with "Biological Modalities", a dissertation in the philosophy of bioinformatics. Since 2019 he has been based at the University Library Basel: first as a research librarian while completing a MAS in Library and Information Science at the University of Zurich, and since September 2021 as Research Navigator for RISE.

His work connects digital humanities, research data management, and applied computing. Current focus areas include the use and evaluation of large language models in humanities research, the extraction of information from (historical) image data, and the design of data infrastructures and research workflows. Further areas of expertise include classification systems (such as controlled vocabularies, thesauri, and ontologies) and FAIR data dissemination. In his teaching, he covers practical workflows with Transkribus, Tropy, GitHub, and Python.
